Course Format and Agenda Overview

Day 1 | 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

A review of the technology on which the SEM is built including electron optics, vacuum system theory and operation, electron detectors, an examination of the SEM hardware, and an overview of electron beam interactions with specimens. The day continues with a review of each component of the Tescan software interface and concludes with an in-depth tutorial on SEM alignment.

Day 2 | 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

The selection of working conditions and image optimization. Topics include variable pressure, low voltage, high resolution, stereo pairs, and 3D reconstruction. This day also covers stage navigation, image acquisition, processing, measurement, archiving, reporting, and optional SEM components for panorama imaging, particle analysis, and movie creation.

Day 3 | 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Troubleshooting, routine maintenance, magnification calibration, and the exchange of filaments and apertures. Techniques to get the best performance from an EDX system are also covered. The course concludes with work on customer samples.
