Tescan joined the EMBL Imaging Centre Symposium in Heidelberg on 13–14 October 2026, bringing together experts from the life-science imaging community to exchange knowledge and explore developments in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and advanced imaging workflows.

Two inspiring days at the EMBL Imaging Centre Symposium 2026 in Heidelberg.Researchers, imaging experts, and technology providers gathered to explore the latest advances in biological imaging, spanning technologies from super-resolution microscopy to cryo-electron tomography. As a proud industry partner of the symposium, Tescan was pleased to contribute to the scientific program and engage with the imaging community through technology discussions, live demonstrations, and a dedicated workshop.
The symposium provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, scientific discussion, and collaboration across the imaging community.
Tescan Workshop Highlights the Role of Xe Plasma FIB in Modern Structural Cell Biology
As part of the symposium, Tescan hosted the industry workshop Bridging the Gap Between Cells and Molecules: Advancing Plasma FIB Technology for In Situ Structural Biology. Led by Jana Šmídová and Samuel Záchej, the session explored how Xe plasma FIB technology and advanced cryogenic workflows are helping researchers overcome key challenges in cryo-electron tomography sample preparation and cryo-volume imaging, enabling them to bridge cellular context and molecular-level information.
A highlight of the workshop was the presentation by Dr. Julia Mahamid from EMBL, who shared exciting new results in cryo-lamella preparation for cryo-electron tomography generated by her team using the Tescan SOLARIS X™ 2 system. Her talk showcased recent advances in workflow development and demonstrated how optimized sample preparation strategies can improve access to biologically relevant targets while preserving native cellular context.
Following the presentations, workshop participants had the opportunity to take part in a hands-on session on the Tescan SOLARIS X™ 2 system installed in Dr. Mahamid's laboratory led by Martina Zánová. The practical demonstration provided attendees with a closer look at Tescan cryogenic workflows and an opportunity to discuss the technology, workflow challenges, and best practices with Tescan specialists.
The lively discussions throughout the workshop highlighted the importance of close collaboration between technology developers and the scientific community in advancing in situ structural biology.
