TESCAN and the University
of Leeds to Host Exclusive Webinar on Low-Dose 4D-STEM for Soft Matter Analysis

Brno, Czech Republic – TESCAN will co-host a collaborative webinar with the University of Leeds, presenting a low-dose 4D-STEM methodology for characterising beam-sensitive polymers and soft matter.

The webinar takes place on Thursday, August 28, 2025, and continues TESCAN’s commitment to advancing electron microscopy through partnerships with leading academic institutions.

Titled “4D-STEM for Beam-Sensitive Polymers: Insights from the University of Leeds & TESCAN”, the webinar introduces a low-dose 4D-STEM approach for structural characterisation of beam-sensitive soft matter.

The method combines fast beam blanking and direct electron detection on the TESCAN TENSOR, the only analytical STEM optimized for 4D-STEM workflows enhanced by fully automated beam precession.  This enables spatially resolved nanodiffraction at total exposures below 10 e⁻Å⁻², capturing crystallographic information while reducing electron beam-induced damage.

Applications include long-chain molecular crystals, polymers, PET blends, and other radiation-sensitive materials used in advanced manufacturing and pharmaceutical formulations. The webinar will highlight recent research outcomes and show how low-dose 4D-STEM can extend the possibilities for soft matter analysis.

The session will feature Professor Andy Brown, Professor of Materials Characterisation at the University of Leeds, and Daniel Němeček, PhD, Product Manager for Analytical TEM/STEM at TESCAN.

This collaboration reflects TESCAN’s ongoing work with universities and research centres to advance practical solutions for complex materials analysis.

This webinar is designed for electron Electron microscopy professionals and materials scientists working with soft matter, radiation-sensitive materials, and advanced analytical STEM techniques.

About Tescan Group

TESCAN was established in 1991 and has grown from a 5 engineers start-up initially, to a company with 800 employees working in 11 countries. We are a leading player in charged-particle optical instrumentation, including Scanning and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM & STEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and X-ray Computed Tomography (micro-CT), with nearly 4500 instruments sold and operational in more than 80 countries.

In 2013, it expanded by merging with ORSAY PHYSICS, a French global leader in customized focused ion and electron beam technologies, and in 2018 by acquiring XRE, a Belgian innovator in the field of Dynamic and micro-CT technologies. A further, more recent milestone was the acquisition in 2023 of TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING and all its subsidiaries by CARLYLE, a US private equity company. In 2024, TESCAN Group successfully acquired the business of EXpressLO LLC through an asset deal, including its patents. Other significant milestones in 2024 included the acquisition of TESCAN KOREA, Ltd. (TKL) and Daeil Microanalysis Laboratory (DML), as well as the announcement of the establishment of new subsidiaries: TESCAN Taiwan and TESCAN Singapore. TESCAN GROUP is headquartered in Brno, Czech Republic, where most of our instruments are expertly assembled, tested, and shipped to customers across the globe.
